Imagine you have built your house with what was sold to you as the best roof design, best roofing materials, and best roof finishing you can ever have, just to be woken up at night by loud noises made by rain drops hitting the roof. Maybe you are in your home trying to catch a snooze after having lunch, then all of a sudden you wake up to the sound of cracking metal coming from your newly installed roof.
Different roofing products have different pros and cons. In this article, we will look at the Stone Coated Roofing Tiles.
What are Stone Coated Roofing Tiles?
Stone coated steel tiles are roofing products made from galvanized steel panels strengthened using aluminium zinc alloy coating and finally coated using stone chips from naturally mined rocks. It is not uncommon to hear some people referring to the stone coated steel tiles as Zinc-Alu steel coated tiles.
Galvanization is the process of applying a protective layer of zinc to steel. This is important because it makes the steel rust proof. It also strengthens the steel enough to allow for moulding of different designs without any adverse impact on the tensile strength of the tile. Galvanizing also improves the steel’s heat resistance characteristics, making the stone coated steel tiles ideal for use in different climatic conditions.
Before the aluminium-zinc alloy coated steel is coated with stone granules, an environment friendly acrylic primer and base coat is applied on it as an adhesive to bind the naturally mined rock granules, that don’t fade, onto the coated steel base.
The stone granules are further bonded by a UV resistant glaze finish which further reinforces the tiles’ longevity by up to 50 years.
Features of Stone Coated Roofing Tiles
Both the acrylic primer and stone granules used when making the stone coated roofing tiles are environment friendly. This means that rain water harvested using our premium UPVC water harvesting gutters can be used for domestic use and gardening thus saving costs on water bills and bridging the water loss crisis being experienced.
Stone Coated Roofing Tiles are aesthetically appealing and come in different colors.
In addition to this, Stone coated tiles are also quite light weight. In fact, while a conventional concrete tile will be about 40.8kg/ sq.mt, stone coated steel tiles have an actual weight of 5.96 kg / sq.mt which is eight (8) times lighter. The reduced weight per square meter consecutively translates into a drastic reduction of the quantity of roof structure materials needed to support the stone coated tiles.
Stone coated steel tiles are usually stacked together through an interlocking system. This makes them cheaper to transport, easier to take up the roof and ideal to handle during the installation process. It is recommended that the application process be done by trained installers to eradicate any chances of roof leakages and unnecessary wastage of material.
Are Stone Coated Steel Roofing Tiles Noisy?
Conventional metal tiles are quite noisy whenever it rains and have a cracking sound when expanding in hot climatic conditions. Stone coated steel tiles have several layers of coating which, besides being effective for corrosion as well as additional tensile strength, also act as an additional noise barrier. This means that the noise impact on the roof is significantly reduced. For complete soundproof impact, you have to include an additional attic insulation as an additional sound barrier and heat insulation.
